Book Review – Until Friday Night

Until Friday Night (The Field Party, #1)Until Friday Night by Abbi Glines

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Forgive me, but I don’t really care about either of you, Maggie and West.

I get it, you’re going through tough times, but what, I ask, what does your attractiveness have to do with it?
Why is Maggie such a looker? Does her suffering become more poignant and her bravery more heart-rending because her milkshake brings all the boys to her yard?

Book Review – The Dark Days Pact

The Dark Days Pact (Lady Helen, #2)The Dark Days Pact by Alison Goodman

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

London, 1812

To Lady Helen,

My dearest friend, I have been following your adventures with anticipation for quite some time now. When you told me of a secret society that vanquished demons hiding among the populace, no one was more thrilled than me that you were to be a part of it. I lived vicariously through your missives for a while, and I was proud to call you a friend.

Then, of course, we could not communicate for a few months, and I must confess, some of the details of your trials slipped my mind. I hope you will not judge me too harshly when I say that I had difficulty recalling names and events. When you spoke of losing the Colligat, I had to sift through my old letters to bring it back to mind.

That said, since I will be judging you quite harshly from now, perhaps you would be fully justified in berating my poor memory. Continue reading

Shallow Reader Post – Power Couple

21524921

Hello, denizens of the web. Valentine’s Day is coming up, so I do a vaguely appropriate read for the occasion and reluctantly dipped my toes into that controversial mire called the Superman-Wonder Woman relationship.

Hey, this is not half bad. I will never be a real fan of the Supes/WW ship, but I can read it. Especially when the Kent looks delicious in the occasional panel.
Current comic boyfriend ranking:
1. Nightwing
2. Batman
3. Aquaman
4. Superman…when someone draws him right

Now, anyone with sense will know that Bats is the only real ship with Diana, but I don’t mind the occasional flights of fancy. See the review here. Here’s hoping that you get more chocolate than I do on the 14th (which is none at all).

Book Review – A Promise of Fire

A Promise of Fire (Kingmaker Chronicles #1)A Promise of Fire by Amanda Bouchet

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Everyone, welcome to this session of “How Many Tropes Can We Fit Into One Book?”

You will notice that your usual host has been rendered speechless by the absurd level of trope stuffing in this book, so I’ve taken over for today.

Now, for all of you that wanted a copy of Kate Daniels without the badass Kate and the hotness of Curran, but with some teenage drama thrown in, you’ve come to the right place.

Shallow Reader Post – Isn’t it Bromantic

28118845

Hello everyone! Are you having a good New Year? ‘Cause I’m not, I have two essays due soon (sobs in despair). I realize I’ve been missing for a while, and it’s mostly because I haven’t actually read any books. There’s a bunch of sequels releasing this month, so fingers crossed. Meanwhile, have this short review.

The story follows Deadpool in his attempts to befriend Spiderman, who quit the Avengers for some vague reason I don’t get. Of course, since this is Deadpool, his ulterior motives have ulterior motives, so things are fairly complicated.

Strangely, I actually sort of ship this now? Read the review here.

Shallow Reader Post – Way of the Weird

College and deadlines have given me a neck that a wrench couldn’t fix. Sigh. The only person who seems to be suffering more is Doctor Strange in this new run:

I also tend to get annoyed when they don’t complete a story arc in one volume and this ends on a major cliff-hanger. I mean, it wasn’t that bad, but honestly the story had barely gotten started.

On the bright side, I sincerely loved the idea of magic having a price for its use and the whole secret Himalayan sect thing.

He isn’t doing too badly at the box office, though. Read the full review here.

Shallow Reader Post – Faces of Death

So I missed a post last week because I was busy, but on the bright side, I got to watch Doctor Strange. The scales have been balanced, if you don’t think too hard about it.

Rambling aside, I read a Batman Detective Comic a while ago and honestly could not tell what was detective about it. Excerpt here:

There are two kinds of people in the world: the ones who believe Batman is the real personality and the ones that believe Batman is the persona.

Ok, the latter camp is something I made up, but it was a cool way to open the review.

Anyway, I belong to the third faction (population: 1) that believes that neither Batman nor Bruce Wayne is the real person, but something in between, a mixed personality that we never get to see.

Read the review here while I fan-girl over the latest Wonder Woman trailer 😉
