Book Review – Moon Called

Moon Called (Mercy Thompson, #1)Moon Called by Patricia Briggs

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Buddy read with Anne, Sesana, Kat and though I didn’t know it at the time, Sara. All the wonderful ladies from Shallow Comic Readers club.

It was a good thing Anne told me this was world building book. Kind of a an introductory paragraph to the series. Otherwise I might not have finished it, it was that slow in the middle.

But the ending did make up for a lot. I suddenly liked Mercy a whole lot more.

The story revolves around a mechanic, Mercedes Thompson, who can shift into a coyote at will. Mercy is a walker, unlike her werewolf neighbours. Fae, vampires and other things that go bump in the dark also populate the world of the book. Then one day, helping a homeless teenager sends Mercy tumbling headlong into a conspiracy involving drugs, murders and her heritage. That’s the summary.

Anyway, after going through a series of ideas for a review, since I’m too lazy to fill this with words, I remembered this joke from the book:

“I’m Mercedes,” I said, loosening an alternator bolt. “What do you want me to call you?”
His eyes lit for a minute. “Mercedes the Volkswagen mechanic?”

I was initially going to do a thing with chocolate bars (don’t ask) but they all looked the same to me. Plus cars make for a better picture.

Folks, I present to you the cast and literary elements of Moon Called as…automobiles with weird names!

Elizaveta Yada-yada-yada (I can’t remember her last name) – The forensic clean up witch

Isuzu Mysterious Utility Wizard

Large, imposing, sounds good in theory (or Japanese) but ends up just having a weird name. Name is self explanatory.

Bran – The head wolf honcho, omnipotent father figure

Studebaker Dictator

Seemed like a good idea when it was born in the 1920’s. Now, not so much.

Samuel – Mercy’s old flame and bodyguard throughout the book

Mitsubishi Starion

Wanted to be a Stallion in looks and spirit but failed due to bad marketing.

Adam – Local alpha wolf, Mercy’s neighbour, probable love interest

Maserati Quattroporte

Looks awesome, is awesome, but has a totally innocuous/bland name. Note: Quattroporte means four doors.

The plot of the book – As mentioned before

Honda That’s

Just chugs along, feeling more and more box-like. Also baffling. I can’t even…

The world building – Focus of the book

Volkswagen Thing

Has everything you want and then some. Slightly complicated construction. Has an old world charm.

Siebold Adelbertsmiter aka Zee – Mercy’s old boss and metalworking fae, a gremlin

AMC Gremlin

Names aside, similarity lies in crankiness. Ancient and dangerous in the wrong hands.

Mac – The boy Mercy helps, is found murdered within a few pages

Chevrolet Citation

Barely worth a mention. Discontinued line.

And finally, Mercy herself…

Bill Thomas Cheetah

Despite the dubious name and relative obscurity, is much faster than it looks. Also, those curves, y’all.
