Book Review – The Dark Days Pact

The Dark Days Pact (Lady Helen, #2)The Dark Days Pact by Alison Goodman

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

London, 1812

To Lady Helen,

My dearest friend, I have been following your adventures with anticipation for quite some time now. When you told me of a secret society that vanquished demons hiding among the populace, no one was more thrilled than me that you were to be a part of it. I lived vicariously through your missives for a while, and I was proud to call you a friend.

Then, of course, we could not communicate for a few months, and I must confess, some of the details of your trials slipped my mind. I hope you will not judge me too harshly when I say that I had difficulty recalling names and events. When you spoke of losing the Colligat, I had to sift through my old letters to bring it back to mind.

That said, since I will be judging you quite harshly from now, perhaps you would be fully justified in berating my poor memory. Continue reading

Book Review – Stalking Jack the Ripper

Stalking Jack the Ripper (Stalking Jack the Ripper, #1)Stalking Jack the Ripper by Kerri Maniscalco

My rating: 1 of 5 stars

Me throughout the process of reading this book:

Such a pity, because the premise was so intriguing. The unimpressive attempt at horror aside, what could have been a decent read is ruined by a number of things, including:

Ignore the the footnotes if you want to avoid spoilers!

Book Review – The Winner’s Curse

The Winner's Curse (The Winner's Trilogy, #1)The Winner’s Curse by Marie Rutkoski

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

I’m not feeling particularly creative this week, so I’ll keep this brief.
This book is, sadly, an attempt to disguise an age-old star-crossed lovers story in an Art of War dust jacket. It’s very subtle, but once you finish the book and look back on it, you’ll realise that beneath the beautiful writing and the setting is a very normal plot. Continue reading

Spring cleaning in winter!

Painting Disaster

Another announcement, folks.ย

Recently some great friends of mine gave me an easy way to post reviews on the blog. Since I usually write my reviews on GoodReads first, and then post it here, I can now just copy-paste the HTML from the GR review feature. The whole review pops up, along with the book details and rating. This is good news for me and you, since I get to cut on down the work I have to do and you get to see my star rating for the book. Even better, clicking on the name of the book takes you to itsย GR page, clicking on the author’s name takes you to their GR page and the rating links to my review. It’s a win-win situation!

Therefore, every review posted from now on will have a slightly different format from the previous ones. I’m also going to be updating the older reviews to match, so bear with me if things look a bit odd.

Quick reminder, comic books and graphic novels will have their reviews posted on the new Shallow Readers Blog. I’m making a new page here so that you can find the reviews easily. I’ll update you on new posts ๐Ÿ˜€

Look forward to it!
