Book Review – Six of Crows

Six of Crows (Six of Crows, #1)Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

All the anticipation in the world couldn’t save this read for me. I am so confused about how I feel about this, mainly because I read it on a long haul flight while battling a pounding headache.

See, I wanted to like it, I really did. There were some moments where I came tantalisingly close to feeling excited, like when you have a word on the tip of your tongue, but lose it anyway.

So my split personality is back to subject this to close scrutiny.

Book Review – The Winner’s Curse

The Winner's Curse (The Winner's Trilogy, #1)The Winner’s Curse by Marie Rutkoski

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

I’m not feeling particularly creative this week, so I’ll keep this brief.
This book is, sadly, an attempt to disguise an age-old star-crossed lovers story in an Art of War dust jacket. It’s very subtle, but once you finish the book and look back on it, you’ll realise that beneath the beautiful writing and the setting is a very normal plot. Continue reading

Book Review – Moon Called

Moon Called (Mercy Thompson, #1)Moon Called by Patricia Briggs

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Buddy read with Anne, Sesana, Kat and though I didn’t know it at the time, Sara. All the wonderful ladies from Shallow Comic Readers club.

But the ending did make up for a lot. I suddenly liked Mercy a whole lot more.

Book Review – Dorothy Must Die

Dorothy Must Die (Dorothy Must Die, #1)Dorothy Must Die by Danielle Paige

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Rating – 3/ 3.5 stars.

I had very big expectations for this book. My friends read, reviewed and enjoyed it, there didn’t seem to be anything that could go wrong. But after I finished, I was left with a vague feeling of dissatisfaction, like I had been eating a heap of cotton candy and expected it to fill my stomach. In short, there just isn’t any stuffing in this turkey. Continue reading

Book Review – The Final Empire

The Final Empire (Mistborn, #1)The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Rating – 2.5 stars.

This is one of those books I was expecting a great deal from but failed to impress me on a grand scale. Sure, it was fun and the magic systems were interesting, but you would think a 600 page book would actually have something happen. I’m fairly certain I finished this book so fast only because nothing in particular happened most of the time, so there wasn’t anything to absorb.  Continue reading
